2010 World Children's Day

The Department of Probation and Child Care Services has elected the Somawathi Home as the best Children’s Home of the southern province of Sri Lanka. On the 2nd of October- Children’s Day- all children and staff were present at the announcement in Galle.

The Department of Probations and Child Care Services of Sri Lanka has completed a major review to improve the quality of children’s homes in accordance with criteria set out by the Government.

To all children’s homes a ranking has been given, to assure a quality-guarantee. The Somawathi Home has been awarded the A status and was elected out of the 32 children’s homes in the South of Sri Lanka as the best children’s home!

Following the provincial elections , the national elections will soon be held to select the best children’s home of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has a total of 253 children’s homes, accommodating over 15,000 orphaned and abandoned children. These children’s homes , both State Institutions and Voluntary Homes, often are of low standards and poor quality. With this review, the Department of Probation and Child Care Services intends to improve the quality of child care.
