Come and see us in Sri Lanka

Thanks to the help of hundreds of volunteers the Somawathi Home is a fact.

map stichting weeshuis sri lankaOur local staff manages and operates the children’s Home. Daily the children attend school and follow a set routine. Everything runs like clockwork. You’re more than welcome to come and see us. And in case you like to organise a sports or games event, you’ll be highly appreciated.

The management in Sri Lanka is fully occupied with the day to day affairs and care for our children. That means, unfortunately, that they no longer have the opportunity to actively assist volunteers or to coordinate internships and thesis projects. But none the less, you are welcome to visit the Somawathi Home. Organizing a fun event in consultation with local management is highly appreciated. And you may like to offer a certain expertise. That is also a possibility, but always in good consultation beforehand.

It is important to realize that most of the staff and children hardly speak any English. The management speaks English and the children do their utmost to learn English.

The following rules and procedures are required and to the interest of the children which we kindly ask you to respect and follow. Als u het Somawathi Home komt bezoeken, dan zal het management u vragen om de huisregels door te lezen en na te leven.

  • Female visitors should wear knee long shorts and t-shirts with a small sleeve but without a cleavage. Transparent clothing is helpen-als-bedrijf-eten-kledingexperienced as offensive.
  • Every day you‘re welcome, except on Sunday ( on this day children visit the temple).
  • Volunteers offering expertise or like to organise a fun event, cannot stay overnight at the Somawathi Home. Hotel accommodation has to be booked privately and at own expenses.
  • To offer lunches for almsgiving or an activity please contact: Somawathi Home: +94 91 49 21 687 or +94 91 22 82 478. Or contact us info@weeshuissrilanka.nl. Upon arrival you can sign up in the office at the main entrance upon presentation of an identity card. Your visit is then registered.
  • If you like to bring gifts or candies, please hand them over to the staff member in charge. Staff will ensure that your gifts are given at an appropriate time to the children, when a child has earned something. We want to avoid raising children who eagerly look forward to visitor’s gifts.
Moreover we prefer to receive a financial contribution to buy necessities. With a donation of Rs. 1000 (approx. € 6.0-) for example we can offer the children one week of music classes! Or for example you can also donate a meal to the children.Like to know more?
